Two Designers walk into a bar (A.K.A. Contrast Masking) | creativebits
Two designers walk into a bar and sit down with their Powerbooks. One designer says to the other, “How much you want to bet I can correct the highlight and shadow of this image without using any adjustment tools or filters directly on the image?
The other designer takes him up on the bet and a minute later begrudgingly hands his associate $10.
How did the first designer win the bet?
The designer used a contrast mask to adjust his highlights and shadows. You can too by following these simple steps.

Many things happened; much food was eaten; many many photos were taken. Best experience: mule ride down the canyon on a snowy morning. Apparently it’s tough to get a spot, but as it was February, we signed up on Sunday and rode on Monday. Unforgettable.

As I wrote to Stefan, We’re not spending our time as wisely as these folks when we could be making little magnetic LEDs to throw and stick on metallic surfaces. Via boingboing.

Our Valentine’s Day gift to each other, just a few days before we go to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. I’ve borrowed used a Nikon D70 at work several times, and it’s a sweet camera. We had long talked about wanting a new camera, one that was more responsive than the usual point and shoot. I had more patience for the inevitable shutter lag of a point and shoot than Ellen. Once she had a chance to try the D70, with its remarkable responsiveness, an SLR seemed a good choice. The D50 has more than enough features, more than enough for any situation in which I’ll find myself, and I’m really pleased. I look forward to sharing some photos here on the site and printing some for display in the house. I’ve long wanted to create some good images, and now I have the tools. Thanks, Ellen. You are the best.

There’s a large fillet of wild-caught salmon smoking on the grill, a very light snow is falling (nothing will stick, but in Atlanta, that’s cool), we’re drinking good red wine, a Gershwin special is on the radio, and we’re going to watch Almodovar’s Talk to Her. I feel rich.

Who Knew a $10 Bill Had Such a Nice Bouquet?
What do they all have in common? None tasted expensive. Each was fairly simple, and yet the flavors of the grapes were allowed to shine through.
This NYT article is from last summer, but I wanted to note it here. I like a good inexpensive wine. A lot.
